Legal status events and alerts
Viewing Legal Status Events in Amplified
Understanding a patent’s legal status history is critical to evaluating its strength and current enforceability. Amplified gives you direct access to detailed legal status events from within the full text view of any publication.
⚠️ IMPORTANT: Always confirm legal status with the official national register and, if necessary, seek appropriate legal counsel.
- While we do our best to provide the highest quality data, legal status in Amplified is not perfect and may not be complete, up-to-date, or accurate. Therefore please always confirm with the official national register and seek legal counsel.
- External links to the relevant register are provided for convenience where possible.
Accessing Legal Status Events
From any patent full text page, click on Legal Status in the header to jump to the Legal Status events table.
You can choose to view:
- This publication only — Legal status events specific to the selected publication.
- Simple family — Legal status events across the entire simple family.
Using the Legal Status Table
The legal status section displays:
- Category – Type of event (e.g., application filing, examination, grant, lapse).
- Family member – Application or publication associated with the event.
- Event description – A summary of the legal status action.
- Event date / Effective date – When the event occurred or came into effect.
- Attributes – Additional information such as reference document number and jurisdiction.
You can search legal status events by keyword using the search bar at the top of the table — a quick way to locate specific events (e.g., “grant” or “lapse”).
Color-Coded Legal Status Events
Events are color coded for at-a-glance review:
- 🟢 Alive event
- 🔴 Dead event
- 🔵 Examination event
- ⚪ Other event
This helps you quickly assess the legal timeline of a patent or family without reading through every line.

📝 This is especially useful for tracking key filings, oppositions, or lapses over time.
External Links to National Registers
Because legal status data can be complex and change quickly, we also provide an External Links button that points you to the relevant national patent register for verification. This is not possible for all registers.
